Our lifelong foster program enables us to save the lives of more dogs by safely placing them in a well-vetted forever home. The number of senior dogs in need is staggering and greater than any of us would like to believe. Our ability to serve these dogs is directly tied to the number of loving permanent homes we can find for them.
Lifelong Foster Program
Fostering can be a very rewarding experience. It is your opportunity to give a senior dog the love and care he/she needs, so they can thrive in their golden years. Some of the benefits include:
- Older dogs are already trained and require much less work than puppies.
- Senior dogs make terrific companions – they still love to play, they love to relax, cuddle, and nap as well.
- Having a dog has been proven to reduce stress, anxiety and depression, ease loneliness, encourage exercise, and improve your overall health.
But the real benefit of our program is that we make it affordable by providing financial assistance for our fostered dogs, thereby removing any perceived risk associated with taking on the responsibilities of an older dog. For the dogs that are part of our foster program, we will cover expenses for medical care, food and basic supplies.
Lifelong Foster Categories:
If you are interested in opening your heart and home to a senior dog, and being part of our family of fosters, here are a few basics:
- You must be 21 years of age.
- A foster application must be submitted. (add a clickthrough)
- Our foster & adoption coordinator will contact you for an initial interview
- Our foster & adoption coordinator will schedule a home visit or meet & greet at the sanctuary. At that time our program guidelines will be reviewed in detail.
- Processing of your application, including reference checks, will determine final approval.
- If approved, a foster agreement will be completed.
- You will be assigned a Marty’s Place team member who will be your primary point of contact as a permanent foster family.
A few guidelines:
- We cannot place a dog in a home with unaltered pets.
- We cannot place a dog in a home where pets are not current on vaccinations and/or do not receive heart worm and flea/tick preventatives year-round.
- We do accept records of titer testing in lieu of vaccinations.
Our goal is to save more dogs. We appreciate your willingness to share our goal, participate in our foster program, welcome one of our senior dogs into your home, and embrace him/her as one of your own family pets. We encourage you to complete the foster application (link) even if the timing is not ideal, or we do not have a dog that works for you. This way we can add you to our network of dog-loving homes for future lifelong foster opportunities.
