THE JOYS AND ADVANTAGES OF ADOPTING A SENIOR DOG

    By Teri Lauletti | Uncategorized | Comments are Closed | 2 August, 2021 | 3
While senior dogs are often overlooked at shelters and rescues, adopting an older dog comes with certain advantages and rewards. Many are already house trained, require less exercise, and adjust more quickly to their new homes. If you’re considering a senior, you understand their years are limited, but you also recognize the love and loyalty you will receive in return during those years is immeasurable!
Looking for a laid-back dog? Seeking one that loves long walks?  Or perhaps it’s a couch potato you’re looking for? The beauty of adopting an older dog is you know his temperament and size and will also have some idea of his energy level. While puppies are undeniably cute, with an older dog you get to skip the housetraining phase and difficult years of adolescence when young dogs can be most challenging. You also won’t be surprised by a puppy that grows much larger than you expected!
“We didn’t want a puppy that would require a lot of training with all their energy and exercise needs,” said Jean Bryer, who with her boyfriend, Joe, adopted 9-year-old Bella from Marty’s Place. “We wanted a dog that was happy to just sit on the couch with us. Also important to us was giving an elderly dog a loving home in their golden years! They deserve that.”
Learn as much as you can from the rescue organization about the senior dog you will be adopting. That includes background, behaviors, and any health-related concerns before bringing your new canine companion home. Some older dogs may require veterinary care that you should be willing to continue. All dogs need time to adjust to new homes. While senior dogs may have certain challenges, many have years to live and so much love to give!
